BORN
UK, in Brighton. I lived there for 26 years and had a love hate relationship with it but now can love it from a distance and I am proud it voted green and is pretty left wing. And the food is a lot better now than when I was there.
FAMILY
Not really, almost all have now passed. I did have an Aunt that went out with F Scott Fitzgerald though. My father was heavily into technology, talking about Quadraphonics to the BBC and telling me everything will one day be solid state, 20 years ago. Amazing really.
MUSIC ROOTS
Punk/Ska, Black and White United Fight, then into Hip Hop/Electro and of course Techno. That is the bit I loved about Brighton. It was all there for the taking, Gay Disco, Mod, New Wave…It was a melting pot on my doorstep. I am forever grateful that is where I absorbed it all.
FIRST PROJECTS
On XL Recordings in 1990. Then I did a label called Magnetic North and finally went under my own name with the Red Series. I was taken under the wing of John Peel who opened loads of career doors for me.
LABELS & PRODUCTION
Perhaps, influenced initially by Chicago House, which was totally different to say New York House. There was a rawness in the production and always a build up in the drum structure, but I really called Chicago House Techno anyway. I already had recorded the Red Series before my own Magnetic North label, so I knew where I was heading, I just hid behind various guises on Magnetic North to make it seem there were more artists on the label than it seemed. I even went under the pseudonym of my Dog's pedigree name (Karl August Von Hasselunne) to add mystique to the label.
The reaction to the Red Series was a delayed one. I was told it hardly sold anything by the label but record shops were telling a different story. I was also approached by some major labels and out of stupid naive loyalty took the record label that had the first two Reds along. That was stupid and caused me a lot of grief but on the good side the Red Series finally got me out and about to DJ worldwide. It's all a learning curve and I am still here doing what I love.
With the albums I had freedom to create mood music, not just for the dancefloor but for me and that helped me to realise dreams. I could score a UK Top 40 with "No One's Driving", a track which I considered to be quite political. My time on Skint was fun too with a few more collaborations and less time alone in the studio. Once again after 5 years I'm back. I stopped for a variety of reasons, needing to re-evaluate my surroundings both socially and business wise and having to sell my old studio also took it out of me. But I'm back and it really is fun again. There’s a lot of support from a lot of people and finally the computer software does what it promises, I feel genuinely excited again, and this time there is no pressure.
THE FUTURE
Looks to be pretty jaded at the moment for the West. My future depends on what happens politically. I am back in the studio though and have done a few collaborative remixes with a chap called Mr. Jones. Our remix outfit is called "_Unsubscribe_", because I use it to take myself off commercial mailing lists and it is how I sometimes feel about my place in society. I think Jones is fine with that too.
