
Don’t let Gina Turner’s ingénue façade fool you. Born and bred in New York has provided House music’s brazen beauty with lots of attitude and sass, best experienced in her intense sets and eccentric productions that will tantalize your mind, body and soul. The multitalented femme fatal has the looks, brains and talent—a lethal combination in the EDM world.
Gina’s passion for House music began after acquiring a taste for the NYC club scene as a teenager, where she encountered the addictive genre at legendary clubs like Shelter and Sound Factory—the catalyst to her future music endeavors. With a heart filled with a passion for music, Gina moved to Boston to attend Emerson College and fulfill her dream of hitting the radio airwaves. While there, she studied audio production and was immersed in the radio circuit, working for Top 40 music stations. Soon, Gina grew tiresome of not being able to connect with or visually see her thousands of devoted listeners being locked up in a studio, while yearning to play the music she loved most—House and Techno.
Not being able to suppress her craving for electronic music, Gina decided it was time to get in front of a crowd and pursued DJing as a way to fill the void her radio career created. Self-proclaimed as a “natural performer,” she seamlessly transitioned into the title of a crowd-pleasing DJ extraordinaire.
After her first live gig, the aspiring mixologist expanded her DJ efforts while dominating airwaves with her own Boston-based radio shows on 88.9 WERS and 99.WECB. She rapidly became a heavy-hitter in Boston’s club scene, but still craved something more. Conquering her goal of radio was complete, which forced Gina on a quest to further her musical career. In 2006, the adventurous Gina looked toward the West Coast and landed in the City of Angels.
Gina’s stint as an Angelino helped her musical success skyrocket to new heights as she formed the DJ duo STACCATO, continued with her radio shows and numerous club gigs, in addition to founding the afterhours movement MAJOR. Out in L.A., Gina also explored her creative side and started producing her own infectious jams, providing the beauty with a non-stop schedule that has yet to die down. She also became the face of the legendary Turntable Lab, wanting to stick to her rots and give back and inspire the next generation of DJs.
Now a highly sought after musical commodity across the globe, Gina has cemented herself as being just one of the boys in the male-dominant world of international DJs—hanging in the same circles with the likes of Zoo Brazil, Junior Sanchez, MK Mark Kinchen, Tom Flynn, Style Of Eye, Diplo, Switch, Laidback Luke and more. While she admits it’s a tough industry for a gal, her motivation and talent has helped her overcome any boundaries or limitations her gender has afforded her.
A self-proclaimed tomboy, Gina is just as comfortable bringing the heavy bass to dance floors everywhere as she intoxicates listeners with insane sets that cover the entire spectrum of House music. Listing influences like Derrick Carter, Two Without Hat, Masters At Work, John Tejada, Armand Van Helden and TKA, as well as the genres Latin freestyle and jacking house, one can just imagine what energetic vibes Gina places in all her musical efforts. She has also dropped
tracks on all of EDM’s most notable labels, including Mixmash Records, Ministry of Sound, Ultra, Sound Pellegrino, Black Hole and Defected, to name a few, and will continue to release her music on today’s most prominent imprints.
With a musical style that’s self-described as “jacking, Latin-infused, energetic House with a NYC attitude,” Gina likes her sessions/productions to always have an invigorating affect—whether it’s a live show, one of her many podcasts or as one-half of the Latin-infused duo Nouveau Yorican with fellow superstar DJ/producer Laidback Luke that was formed in 2009. As a part of Nouveau Yorican, she and Laidback Luke create sizzling boot-shaking tunes, while continuing her radio career with shows for Scion Radio 17 called “Below the Baseline,” iHeartRadio and France’s Underground FG. Always created on the fly, Gina has new material each week for all her shows that mostly depending on her mood, but it’s her three-hour show on “Below the Baseline” that’s filled with guest interviewers, mixers and other musical treats she loves most. As a devout Yoga enthusiast and instructor, Gina has been able to incorporate yogini beliefs into her music, which results in powerful, high-energy sessions that provide a natural balance of gentle notes coupled with a musically rhythmic flow. And because of such balance and versatility, Gina can easily transition into various musical genres, having worked and supported acts that vary from Jaime Jones to Tiesto, Sander Kleinberg to Benny Benasssi and Dave Clarke to The Martin Brothers.
To further add to her already impressive arsenal of skills, Gina has some serious chops, with vocal talents that rival the best pop stars on today’s top charts. She’s lent her vocal talents to numerous tracks and looks to heighten her singing ability with more collaborations currently in the works. Besides all this, she also is a regular contributor on the Diplo-founded Mad Decent site in conjunction to numerous tracks and mixes that are regularly featured on Discobelle and Fool’s Gold. Not to mention all her own productions and remixes, something that’s one of her main focuses at the moment. Claiming it to be a great way to express oneself, the mixing mistress is
constantly finding new tunes and perfecting her genre-blending sounds. With so much in the works, Gina can’t disclose all the details just yet, but you’ll definitely be hearing more from Miss Turner as she dives deeper into her production skills.
Blessed to be in the “coolest profession” ever, Gina is on a mission to continue making great music and wants to have a blast doing it all. While there may be an excess of DJs, there is still only one Gina Turner. “I’m just me, and that’s what sets me apart from every other DJ out there!” Well that and the fact that she’s a household name in House music who just so happens to be female.
